Are you new to the slam poetry community? Are you new to Southern Fried? Whatever the case is, we got you covered for all things family and tournament!
Here are some do’s if you’re a newcomer to the community:
- READ THE RULES OF THE TOURNAMENT! This is extremely important when either signing up as a team or an indie. You have to know how prelims work and of course if you make it to final stage, how that works too.
- Introduce yourself! We are a big family and we want to know who you are! Tell us where you’re from, what team or city are you representing? Join our Facebook group for additional commentary!
- Get to know the other poets from different cities/states. Use this opportunity to not only compete, but to network and expand your reach into other regions.
- Go to the side events! If you aren’t a night owl, go to the daytime events. Side events are perfect places to hang out in a less-stressful environment. We are here to compete, but we really just want to have fun. Side events are voluntary and a great way to spectate and catch a vibe.
- Go to the workshops, you’ll likely never get this quality of workshop for free again. Slam is important as is workshops and after hour events.
- One of the most magical parts of Southern Fried is the ciphers! If you see one, join in! (Wait your turn of course, lol) Ciphers happen everywhere, so keep your eyes peeled for groups of poets!
- Stay hydrated, be mindful of who you take substances from, go everywhere in pairs or groups, and wear sunscreen.
- If time permits, try to explore the host city. Southern Fried Poetry Slam is in a different city every year within the southeast region and there’s always really cool stuff to check out aside from the side events and the tournament.
- Bring your friends! They can purchase festival passes and a final stage ticket to support you and to just witness the awesomeness SoFried brings! This is a tournament, but it’s a festival that’s open to anyone who wants to attend! (Note: Some years, prelims are free, but the other side events, workshops and final stage are not. Make sure you refer to the current year’s tournament page for more information!)
- Do seek out your board. They are here to serve community and can direct you when you have a need. We understand as a first timer or newbie that this can be overwhelming and support is never too far away. The board can be reached via email at info@southernfriedpoetryslam.com.
